The Oberoi Rajvilas There is nowhere else on earth like Rajasthan. A marriage blessing here is a kaleidoscopic affair of marigold garlands, 18th-century Shiva temples, Mogul palaces, refreshing masala chai, opulent tented honeymoon suites and some of the warmest people in the world. Jaipur is one of India's most vibrant and exotic cities. Known as the 'Pink City' from the colour of the local sandstone and from the coat of pink colourwash with which its buildings were spruced up in preparation for the visit of Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1876, it is famous for its colourful bazaars and is home to the astonishing Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds. part of a huge palace complex built in 1799, this imposing five-storey pink sandstone facade was designed to allow ladies of the royal harem to view the elegant boulevard below while remaining unobserved. These days the boulevard is busy thoroughfare swarming with bikes, camels and cabs, and lined with shops selling carpets and dhurries, block-printed fabrics, jooties (Jaipur slippers) of colourfully embroidered camel leather, blue pottery and handmade paper.
