Known as the 'Pink City' from the colour of the local sandstone and from the coat of pink colourwash with which its buildings were spruced up in preparation for the visit of Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1876, it is famous for its colourful bazaars and is home to the astonishing Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds. part of a huge palace complex built in 1799, this imposing five-storey pink sandstone facade was designed to allow ladies of the royal harem to view the elegant boulevard below while remaining unobserved.
